A Few Additional Thoughts on The Allegations of Torture
Posted in Politics & Government on April 22nd, 2009 by MorningStarIt appears that, with the lack of any real news to report on, America’s mindless media are contentedly shoveling and re-shoveling their “torture” stories as if each newly revised angle taken were somehow unique, actually worth discussing, or slightly more credible than the previous day’s dose of manipulative outrage stirring crap. I suspect that the American media operates under the belief that if they carry the same headline story for a sufficient number of consecutive days, the brain-dead political hacks in Washington D.C. will begin to see their thrashing and moaning as an expression of public outrage. Then again, I may have that backwards, and it might be that the motivation for all the tripe comes from Washington and the media is simply the tool being used to convince us that we are outraged. Either way, I remain far from being outraged even if I am sick of hearing about how completely shameful this is all supposed to be. It’s enough to make me wish we would be invaded by mutant cannibals simply to give the media something different to wax hysterical about.
The top-secret torture memo released at the behest of President Obama details the practice of inflicting discomfort on individuals captured in the process of this nation’s entirely justifiable war on worldwide terrorism. Some of those individuals played a role in the terrorist attacks of 9-11; some were in positions of leadership for terrorist organizations planning future strikes against the American people, and some were captured in the process of carrying out attacks against American soldiers and civilian personnel around the globe. None of them are what we would consider Eagle Scout material; for the most part they are radical Islamic zealots eager to sacrifice themselves for the chance to bring death and destruction on innocent people who do not share their views with equal zeal. The one common bond they all share is the burning desire to give up their life in the effort to smash and destroy the United States of America and it’s entire population, and a large percentage of them were actively involved in ongoing plans to wreck havoc, death and mayhem on American citizens at the time of their capture. By extracting information relevant to those ongoing plans for terrorist action countless American lives have been protected. Given the circumstances, the discomfort of the prisoners subjected to the interrogation techniques described in what the news media now describes as the “torture” memo is entirely justifiable regardless of how shameful some might view it, and those who are most vocal about how terrible it appears should stop babbling for the few seconds necessary to consider the alternative. How terrible would the wrath of the American people be if those planned attacks were simply ignored and thousands died because the information could not be extracted with excellent care and great compassion?
I am always amazed at the incredible depth of American stupidity. Just about the time I think we have reached the limit of our extreme foolishness some one strikes off in a new direction and deeper we go. I am astounded by the fact that so many seem to honestly believe that the ten techniques described in Obama’s release constitute “torture” in any real sense of the word. I can’t help but wonder what these clueless and naive individuals would think if they discovered that most of those “torture” techniques are routinely employed by the staff of every jail, prison, mental institution, juvenile hall, and even some nursing homes existing in America. Virtually anywhere in this country where one individual has been given the authority to control the daily activities of individuals, who for whatever reason, have no, or little recourse could be similarly peeled open to expose such tortures. Should we consider it “torture” when the inmates of city jails around the U.S. receive only two scant nastily prepared meals a day, or they are deprived of sleep by guards so inconsiderate as to leave the lights on 24 hours a day, seven days a week? How many prisoners in the U.S. have sat for months or years in five by eight foot solitary confinement cells, no clothes, no reading materials, lights blazing away, a windowless solid door, a lidless toilet, no toilet paper, a plate of steel for a bed, one blanket and never-ending time. Where is all the liberal outrage and shame mongering over this? It’s certainly not a rare occurrence and I would even go so far as to guarantee with absolute certainty that every politician in Washington represents an area in which this is practiced. I would also guarantee with absolute certainty that not only is it routinely practiced in the area they represent, but that they know all about it and have known for years. When you consider the full truth of the matter it sort of mitigates some of the hysteria expressed in their outrage.
With the captured terrorists, the infliction of extreme discomfort is undertaken for the purpose of extracting information. In America’s state and federal prison system the infliction of extreme discomfort is undertaken for a variety of reasons such as vengeance, retaliation, and sadism, to provide entertainment or to bolster the injured egos of the small and pathetic. Which is worse? How is it that we can ignore the routine practice of inflicting extreme discomfort when it is only vaguely justified, and yet when it is undertaken for a very definite purpose, such a saving American lives, we get all tied up in hysterical knots? If, by reading this you have gotten the impression that the purpose of this writing is to condemn both then you have missed the point because I could care less about the ill-treatment of criminally depraved maniacs no matter what motivated them to action. However, the duplicitous actions of the highly vocal finger-pointing, shame mongering cretins screaming about the inhumane treatment of vicious Middle-Eastern killers when they are fully aware that American prisoners are suffering far worse for far less justification is something that all of us should actively consider.
