The Democrats – they want the bill but not the blame

Only 20 percent of American voters want to revive the controversial federal immigration bill that has the backing of corporate interests, Arizona Senator John McCain, President Bush and the Democratic Senate leadership.

A new poll by Rasmussen Reports found that only 20 percent of the American voters surveyed wanted the Senate amnesty bill revived for further consideration. Fifty-one percent of respondents said they prefer smaller steps than the comprehensive approach taken in the proposal. Another 16 percent want the immigration plan put off until next year. Rasmussen Reports also found that 69 percent of America’s voters strongly favored an approach to the issue that was focused on enforcement and security rather than on amnesty or any other form of legalization. The Rasmussen Reports poll is available on line.

Senate bill 1348 which, is now scheduled to be resurrected on the Senate floor sometime this week, would not provide immediate amnesty but it would provide the illegal aliens in this country with the authorization to work, the freedom to leave and re-enter the United States and it would prohibit immigration authorities from detaining them for deportation.  Many American citizens would argue that while these benefits may not be amnesty, they amount to the very same thing.  Senate bill 1348 would also create a guest worker program for up to 400,000 more immigrants to come here every year, it would forgive the 20 million illegal aliens currently in the U.S. for unpaid back income taxes and offers no enhancement to border security beyond what was passed into law during the 109th congress last year.  Furthermore, Senate bill 1348 carries the full endorsement of President Bush, Edward Kennedy, the Democratic Party, Senator John McCain and The National Council of La Raza.  It has been estimated that the cost associated with Senate bill 1348 will add another $3 trillion dollars to the burden of the American taxpayers.

The Democratic Party which is the controlling interest in the U.S. Senate is overjoyed with the prospects of resurrecting the amnesty bill for their arch-enemy George W. Bush.  It represents legislation that the Democrats really want but on the other hand it is also something they do not want to take the blame for because they know there is going to be some major fallout from it if the thing passes.  By allowing Bush to resurrect the bill in the Senate, the Democrats hope to escape the blame entirely by pointing at the president when the problems arise and taking credit for what the minority advocate groups view as beneficial to their cause.  They want to be able to avoid the backlash of the anti-amnesty majority even as they welcome their newly legalized supporters to the liberal fold.  Whoever says you can’t have your cake and eat it too is obviously not a Democrat.
